With most players having sunk countless hours intoAnimal Crossing: New Horizonssince its debut a month ago, many are wondering what’s next for their small slice of island paradise. Since the game’s release, Nintendo has promised that years of new content will make its way to the title post-launch,with new events planned to mark major real-world holidaysand new items coming to the game consistently. However, it seems far more new additions will eventually make their way to the title, especially if a new datamine turns out to be true.
Posting about the discoveries on his Twitter page, dataminer Ninji revealed a number of major changes supposedly coming toAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsin the near future. Among those changes were major new additions to the fishing side of the game, with the leaker revealing that new mechanics will soon be added that allow players to catch new fish in exciting ways.

According to the dataminer, the biggest of these new additions will give the player the ability to dive underwater, with Ninji claiming “diving will allow you to obtain fish (a different set from fishing ofc) and seaweed. There’s a portion of the save file reserved to store them already!” This is evidently a big change to howfishing has always operated in priorAnimal Crossingtitles, with previous games merely allowing the player to use a fishing rod to catch sea creatures. If this turns out to be true, it will no doubt add another layer to the fishing mini-game that has been lacking for a number of years.
Alongside this, Ninji also reveals that the game will be getting what appears to be new forms of fishing bait as well, with the dataminer claiming “1.0.0 has a file for a “Seafood” Critterpedia page that’s supposed to contain 33 items.” AsNew Horizonsplayers will no doubt know, the only form of fishing bait currently available in the game is theManila Clam, which players can dig up on a beach and use to catch rarer fish.
According to Ninji, they’re not yet sure if the diving mechanic and the new Seafood Critterpedia will tie into each other, however, it seems likely that the two could be revealed in some sort of update focusing onthe fishing aspects ofAnimal Crossing. Regardless, it’s great to hear that Nintendo is looking to expand on the mechanics first outlined inNew Horizons,especially now players are slowly getting ready to move on to the next big addition of content.
