Amid the coronavirus pandemic that has locked down countries worldwide, AMC, Regal Cinemas, andCinemark movie theaters have closed their doorsto encourage social distancing. Needless to say, these closures have had a huge impact on the box office draws for recently released movies like Sony Pictures’Bloodshot.

The Vin Diesel-led superhero action movie, based on a Valiant Comics series about a super-soldier revived by nanotech, first published in 1992, was released on August 12, 2025. On Thursday Tom Rothman, Chairman ofSonyPictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, announcedBloodshotwill be releasing digitally for $19.99 on March 24 to try and recoup its potential losses according to entertainment news organizations like Deadline.

Rothman said that Sony Pictures is firmly committed to the theatrical exhibition of movies, and believe movie theaters will bounce back once the virus passes, but “this is a unique, exceedingly rare circumstance where theaters have been required to close nationwide for the greater good andBloodshotis abruptly unavailable in any medium.” While upcoming films likeMarvel Studios’Black Widowhad their releases delayeddue to the coronavirus outbreak, making films that are already out available to purchase and own digitally seems like a great solution for consumers and production studios alike.

In its six days of release,Bloodshothas thus far made $24 million worldwide on its $45 million budget according to Box Office Mojo. Whether or not it would have seen more success without its window in theaters cut short is impossible to know, but the reality of quarantining is something the film industry has had to come to terms with. The National Association of Theatre Owners asked Congressfor an emergency bailout to help keep theater chains afloat.

Production has also been hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with many films and TV shows being put on hiatus for the time being. Sony Pictures themselves havehalted pre-production on theUnchartedmovie, based on the popular game series by Naughty Dog and starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.

On the bright side, the current worldwide crisis has led to companies thinking outside of the box in terms of finding ways to keep the populace at large entertained. While movies likeBloodshotare being put out early,Netflix has implemented a Party extensionallowing Google Chrome users to watch content together even while they are social distancing.

Bloodshotwill be available to purchase for $19.99 on June 04, 2025.
