What is Breathedge?

Breathedgeis an adventure survival gamewith a major twist. Set in outer-space,Breathedgetasks the player with surviving the unforgiving environment and finding out the truth behind their spaceship crash. This may sound like a standard plot for a survival game, butBreathedgeis anything but standard. The game has a lot of humor to it, and it consistently mocks itself along with other games in the survival space. Fans of a more grave and weighty survival experience should look elsewhere, asBreathedgeseeks to make the player laugh. Even from an outside perspective, it’s clear thatBreathedgedoesn’t offer the typical adventure survival experience, but something quite different.

For starters, players are joined by an immortal chicken inBreathedgewho can sometimes help to take the edge off of the occasional heavy atmosphere of the game. The chicken can be of use at times, as it serves as a way to plug holes in the spaceship and stop electrical sparks, which will reward the player withBreathedge’sChicken Dielectric achievement. The chicken is, unfortunately, the only companion players can have, asBreathedgeis purely a single-player game. WhileBreathedgeis seemingly a good fit for a multiplayer survival setup, there is currently no option to play with a friend, immortal chickens aside. This may be disappointing to some, butBreathedgeplayers can still enjoy the game’s humorous story solo.

A Combination of Prey and Subnautica?

Aesthetically, whileBreathedgeis set in outer space, it does appear very similar to the likes ofSubnautica. The game’s foreboding space setting can occasionally summon similar feelings to those produced bySubnautica’soften terrifying deep-sea setting.Subnauticais renowned for the horror elements mixed within a survival game, and whileBreathedgemay not haveSubnautica’sLeviathan enemy types, it does offer its own threats. Like the rest of the game, the enemies inBreathedgeare slightly ridiculous in nature.Breathedgehas corpse fueled coffin robots, that will occasionally threaten the player, although much of the fear players feel may derive from other elements of the game.

While there are similarities betweenBreathedgeandSubnautica, not least of all being the game’s otherworldly setting,Breathedgemay be closer to another survival horror game.Preyis an outer space horror gamethat revels in the players’ fear of the unknown.Prey’souter-space setting maybe makes it a closer fit withBreathedgethanSubnautica, although the gameplay and art style appears to beSubnauticainspired. Ultimately,Breathedgeis possibly the perfect mixture betweenSubnauticaandPreythat could appeal to both sets of gamers, while its satirical stylings may make it worth playing for non-survival fans. Either way,Breathedgeis worth checking out, and its availability on Game Pass makes it a no brainer for Xbox and PC players.
