Activision and Infinity Ward have a long history of adding cosmetic goods intoCall of Duty: Modern WarfareandWarzone, though these often do not extend further than changing how a weapon, vehicle, or operator looks. One exception wasModern Warfare’s Tomogunchi wristwatches, which gave players a virtual pet to bring onto the battlefield that was modeled after real-life Tamagotchi products. Now, Tomogunchis are back with a fresh coat of paint.
The officialCall of DutyTwitter account announced that Tomogunchi Turbo items are available in the store today which allow players to, “Equip your operator with the most advanced digital wrist pet ever.” They ostensibly appear to be the same thing as the original Tomogunchi watches, which allowed players to hatch, grow, and evolve virtual pets by racking up killstreaks or completing objectives, but now with colorful graphics and a redesigned chassis.

ThoughModern Warfareand its free-to-play battle royale counterpartWarzoneare generally focused on creating a realistic depiction of gunplay and war, the games' developers are no strangers to adding bizarre or funny content that injects more whimsey into the experience. One obvious example was theAnime Express bundle in theCall of DutyStorethat added a pink, anime-themed “Senpai” vehicle skin, body pillow charm, and more.
Call of Duty’s in-game bundles have also been used for more altruistic purposes in the past. Earlier this year,Modern WarfareandWarzonehad a “Fearless Pack"in honor of National Military Appreciation Month that donated all of its proceeds to Activision’sCall of DutyEndowment program, in-turn helping unemployed veterans find work.
The Tomogunchi Turbo wristwatches are more focused on being a fun additional mechanic that encourage better play, and offer its users a number of unlockable charms. However, that kind of nostalgic distraction may be just what some players are looking for to keep themselves occupied while trying to solve the ever-evolvingCall of Duty 2020teaser puzzlesthat Activision, Treyarch, and Raven Software have created.
