Summary
Marvel Rivals' recent announcement trailer revealed the roster for the upcoming 6v6 hero shooter. While Thor may have gotten snubbed from this list, his brother Loki managed to slip in. The god of mischief will be coming toMarvel Rivals, and in a way that looks quite similar to his earliest MCU portrayals.
WhenMarvel Rivalswas just a rumor, there was no limit to fan speculation; any character from Marvel’s long history was on the table. Now that a concrete roster is available, many heavy hitters have made the final list, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, Black Panther, and more, in addition to plenty of lesser known characters, including Luna Snow and Magik. One interesting miss, however, was Thor. Not only is he a well-known Avenger, he’s the brother of Loki—who did make the cut. Of course, NetEase has said that future updates will add more heroes and villains to play with, meaning the god of thunder may still be on the horizon.
How Marvel Rivals' Loki Compares To The MCU’s God Of Mischief
TheMCU’s version of Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, gave the character a lease on life like never before. Just as with the other Marvel characters in the Infinity Saga, the MCU brought them to new heights of fame. Hiddleston’s charismatic performance not only made Loki one of the most beloved MCU villains, but gave him enough popularity to warrant the spinoff showLoki. Though some of its plot points have been controversial, there’s no question that the show is still enjoyed by many. However, Loki’s portrayal inMarvel Rivalslooks to take more inspiration from earlier periods in the MCU.
Marvel Rivals' Loki Looks A Lot Like The 2012 Version Of The Character
The design for Loki inMarvel Rivalsis incredibly similar to his iconic look from 2012’sTheAvengers. He retains his golden, horned helmet (albeit with more sharp angles), as well as the dark greens and dark blues from his MCU outfit. The biggest differences include a heavier use of gold as well as the introduction of fur into the design. This increased regality is very fitting for his egotism, as well as forMarvel Rivals' exaggerated character design.
Another element of similarity is Loki’s scepter, which also carries a similar design to the one seen inAvengers. Interestingly,Marvel Rivals' reveal trailershows off a scepter with a yellow jewel, as opposed to the blue stone seen in the MCU. This blue gem, the Mind Stone, was later retconned to be yellow—so it’s possible that Loki could still be wielding an Infinity Stone here.
Loki Keeps A Mischievous Moveset
Though this is also reminiscent of the comics, some of Loki’s in-game magic is similar to the tricks he uses in the MCU. Loki can create copies of himself and shapeshift intootherMarvel Rivalscharacters. A curious detail in the trailer is a section where Loki turns into Black Panther and takes on some of the powers that presumably belong to that hero (such as turning into a spectral panther), something that seems a step above his MCU abilities.
Hulk Can Attack Loki In A Way MCU Fans Will Recognize
The part of the trailer where Hulk is shown off includes an interesting interaction with Loki. Rather than rampaging throughMarvel Rivals' destructible environments, Hulk here performs a finishing move on the god where he slams him around. This move is almost identical to how the Hulk takes down Loki at the end of 2012’sAvengers.
