ADestiny 2clip provides a painful reminder of why Strand still requires Guardians to be aware of their environment. The Darkness subclass that arrived with theLightfallexpansion forDestiny 2offers impressive mobility for players, but it will not necessarily save them from plummeting to their death.
AlthoughLightfall’s disappointing campaign is arguably best summarized as a protracted introduction to Strand, the subclass itself isone of the best additions toDestiny 2in recent years. It seems to reaffirm the gaming myth that any game is improved by the inclusion of a grappling hook, granted to Guardians by default with Strand as a replacement for the traditional Grenade ability. The versatility of the Grapple ability means that it can be used defensively, to barrel directly into enemies, or just role-play as Spider-Man. However, Strand is not an automatic win button, as it certainly requires an appreciation for how movement operates inDestiny 2, and one of the most important aspects is being aware of the environment.

A video posted to Reddit by Zachthema5ter captured an almost perfect Strand maneuver that fell apart at the final moment. During Desperate Measures, the final mission ofLightfall’s campaign, a Thresher is seen swooping in as the Guardian attempts to take out a couple of AA guns. Sensing an opportunity to look cool, they grapple onto the Thresher and begin to be dragged by it in midair. The Thresher laps around the arena as the Guardian continues to fly alongside it, and they almost succeed in reaching the second AA gun that needs to be destroyed.
But as they release the grapple and launch themselves to the ground, their valiant effort does not account for thearchitecture of Neomuna’s buildings. As a result, the Guardian falls through a gap in the platform to their death. For any wondering how the grapple lasted so long in the first place, given that most swings only last a few seconds, it is because the Thresher was moving. Grapples end when you near the attached entity or are no longer facing it, so as the Thresher was moving faster than the grapple speed, the Guardian flew.
It is almost surprising that the Guardian was not killed by the Thresher given how much grief they have been inflicting upon players. Even after being nerfed,Threshers have been defeating Guardians with a single hit, which proved particularly frustrating during last week’s Nightfall strike.
Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
