While clarifying that Techland is not announcingDying Light 3, he revealed that the team had discussed a potential sequel while working onDying Light 2’s upcoming Gut Feeling update. He then asked fans to vote on which profession they would prefer for the new game’s mechanic. The options in the Twitter poll were “Just a survivor,” “Nightrunner,” “Pilgrim,” and “GRE Agent (Turned Good)." GRE Agent won handily with 42.8% of votes, followed by 33.7% for Survivor, 19.5% for Nightrunner, and a meager 4% for Pilgrim.
TheGlobal Relief Effort was an international organization introduced inDying Light. While outwardly dedicated to medical research and humanitarian relief operations, the GRE was secretly involved in biological weapon development. The organization gets up to quite a few shady operations inDying Lightand is directly responsible for the zombie pandemic that nearly wipes out humanity. ProtagonistKyle Crane worked for them in the original game, though the “Turned Good” comment indicates that the new character might have a more checkered past.
Either way, it’s an unexpected choice that could letDying Light 3delve further into the shady organization. That potential may be why fans were much more receptive to a former GRE Agent protagonist forDying Light 3. It’s still unclear if Techland will definitely have GRE Agent be the new protagonist’s backstory or if the Twitter poll impacts the studio’s decision-making. Still, the studio will hopefully at least take the fan’s wishes into consideration, assuming thatDying Light 3eventually happens.
