Edge of Eternityhas been in Early Access on PC for a while now, and its presence at March’s Xbox Indie Showcase sparked some speculation about a potential release onXbox Game Pass. Now,Edge of Eternitydeveloper Midgar Studio has confirmed that to be true.
Edge of Eternityis a new JRPG that defines itself as heavily inspired byclassic PlayStation 1-era JRPGs. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the game released an Early Alpha build on PC in 2014, and it has been in development ever since. The game features an expansive story campaign as well as turn-based tactical combat.

The announcement came withEdge of Eternity’s June 8 PC release date trailer, which also confirmed a console release date in Q4 2021. The trailer gives a good look at the game’s world, characters, and combat. There is a lot ofinspiration fromFinal Fantasyevident in the trailer, with the world looking to be a mix of science fiction and fantasy with some great-looking enemy design. The trailer also gives a look at the game’s turn-based combat system that uses hex-based grid positioning. Further embracing its inspirations,Edge of Eternityalso features music from Yasunori Mitsuda, best known for composingChrono Trigger.
The game’s launch on Xbox Game Pass at release is great news for JRPG fans, but it does not come as much of a surprise. Xbox has been investing heavily in the subscription service, as well as trying to get more Japanese-developed games on the service,including launching a new ad campaign featuring virtual YouTubers. The game will also join a load of smaller indie titles that have launched on the service, with many of their developers reporting their involvement in Xbox Game Pass generated a lot more sales for their game through the increase in exposure.
Edge of Eternitylooks promising, and reactions to the Early Access release have been largely positive. Many fans have been waiting for the game to fully release, and it is great to see that it will be releasing soon while reaching an all-new audiencethrough its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass. The game looks like it will have something for any fans of old-school JRPGs, and the positive reception of bodes very well forEdge of Eternity’s full launch.
Edge of Eternityreleases July 28, 2025 on PC, and will release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
