Players are able to join The Institute, which will help them look into the organization’s past. While this is helpful, exploring the Commonwealth and talking to the inhabitants will allow players to learn more about The Institute’s mysterious past.
10Based At Old M.I.T
The Institute is located under what was once the C.I.Tin Boston. This is a reference to the real-life M.I.T, and explains why the scientists in The Institute are able to create synths. Duringthe Great War, scientists from the C.I.T hid and created a community in the aftermath.
In the years after the war, the scientists continued on with their experiments. This led to the creation of synths, which went on to terrorize the Commonwealth and its people.
9Can Become Leader Of The Institute
The player’s son, Shaun, is revealed to be the leader of The Institute, making it a hard decision to deal with the organization. The player can potentially become the leader of The Institute if they side with them, however. It is revealed Shaun is dying, and Shaun has chosen the player as his successor.
This annoys a few members of The Institute, as the player has only been helping for a few months at most. Despite this, the player is able to become the leader and is in charge of the force that terrorizes Boston.
8Referenced In Fallout 3
The Institute was first referenced inFallout 3when the player visits Rivet City. The player is able to meet a man named Dr. Zimmer, who is searching for a synth, named an android at the time. Dr, Zimmer is revealed to be a member of The Institute, and members of the Railroad are also met.

By meeting Horace Pinkerton in the bow of Rivet City, it is revealed Horace changed the synth’s face to disguise him. By talking to Horace, the player is able to learn a tiny bit about The Institute.
7Super Mutants Made By The Institute
It is revealedThe Institute is responsiblefor the appearance of Super Mutants. The Institute made these creatures by using the FEV virus, releasing them into Boston. An example of a friendly Super Mutant can be found in the Glowing Sea, by the name of Brian Virgil.
It is possible to help Brian Virgil become human again, showing the process can be reversed. Next time the beep of a nuke can be heard, the player will know who tothank for the suiciders.
6Sturges Might Be A Synth
Sturges is known as a member of the Minutemen and is one of the first-named characters the player meets inFallout 4.He relocates with the rest of the group to Sanctuary Hills, acting as the mechanic of the settlement. There is a hidden secret Sturges hides.
Sturges is flagged as essential, making it impossible to kill him. If the player happens to kill him using console commands, they can find a synth component in his inventory. Whether this was a mistake or there was suppose to be more about this component is unknown.
5Uses Crows As Spies
While birds are found throughout theFalloutseries, the crows inFallout 4are unique. They may look normal, but it is revealed they are being used to spy on the Commonwealth. Players can find cameras in The Institute, located high up and in locations birds would normally be found.

It is a little chilling to think the player is being spied on by these birds. For any player that wishes, they may shoot at the crows, limiting The Institute’s eyes in the Commonwealth.
4Trying To Recreate Pre-War Animals
Gorillas can be located inside of The Institute, where it is revealed these animals are synths. It is the dream of an Institute scientist named Clayton Holdren to recreatePre-War animals. While it is a noble dream, it is weird to think they will be synthetic.
The team is starting with gorillas but wants to move on to recreate more animals. Depending on which animals are selected, it is interesting to think there could be giraffes or even extinct animals running around Boston.
3Coursers Have Binary On Their Neck
Coursers are used by The Institute to hunt down synths, making them a dangerous foe. These enemies have black leather coats, making them stand out from other synths. There is also another feature that makes them stand out from the rest of the synths.

A bit of binary can be found on the back of a courser’s neck. The binary reads ‘01110011 01111001 01101110 01110100 01101000’ which can be translated into ‘synth’. It is an interesting detail, as players will most likely not be looking at the back of a courser’s neck.
2Synths Cause Paranoia In The Commonwealth
Synths are a source of stress for many residents of the Commonwealth. Diamond City does not trust them after an event that took place before the game and the city of Covenant has a test to distinguish between human and synth. Players are also able to find events where family members turn on their own, thinking someone is a synth.
This is a fair assumption, as many major characters in the game are revealed to be synths. Finding a terminal in The Institute will reveal which major characters have been replaced by synths and who is acting as an informant for The Institute.
1An Unfortunate Injury
Liam Binet lives in The Institute but has a secret he is hiding. He ishelping the Railroadunder the codename Patriot. It is revealed he is helping synths escape from The Institute. Along with this secret, Liam has another secret he is trying to hide.
Players are able to find a terminal that reveals Liam injured his wrist while using a terminal. It is also noted that Liam did not want to tell anyone how the injury occurred. While it might have been something innocent, Liam might have hurt himself while giving in to urges.
