The Adventure Palsis a 2D platformer with a similar art style toSuper Mario Bros. Wonderand an oddball sense of wonder too. The game stars a young boy, Wilton, who witnesses people around him get turned into hot dogs after an evil is unleashed. With the help of his wooden sword and giraffe stuffed inside of his trusty backpack, Wilton is on a quest to turn everyone back to normal.
This giraffe can help Wilton in a myriad of ways, like spinning its tongue around to allow players to glide while platforming. It’s a silly game in the vein ofAdventure Time, brimming with charm, and it evenhas two-player co-op.
Cupheadis one of thehardest games on Switch, even with the helpful assists. It looks like a cartoon from the 1930s, which is impressive to this day, and it’s one of those games that one has to play to believe it isn’t just a cartoon.
While there are some traditional platforming levels with run and gun mechanics,Cupheadis more of a boss-rush type of experience. All of these bosses have several phases and no checkpoints in between. Thankfully, players can team up with a co-op partner to ease the tension level just a bit.
It Takes Twois a game that has to beplayed in co-op to work. The game centers on a couple with marital problems who get transformed into dolls after their child makes a wish. The game then becomes a series of mini-games and platforming segments wherein players have to work together to solve any puzzle presented to them.
The developer, Hazelight Studios, had experimented with co-op-only experiences before this, likeA Way Out, which involved two convicts breaking out of jail. However,It Takes Twotook this co-op-centric concept to a whole other level, and Hazelight Studios was rewarded for its dedication, as the game was a critical and commercial success.
Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxeis one of the more obvious picks for Nintendo fans. LikeSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, this game features four-player co-op, but multiplayer is not necessary. It began on the Wii, and it just received this remaster earlier this year, complete with a bounty of additions.
It’s a fairly standard adventure with Kirby featuring his classic power-ups, from his sword getup to his bombing attire. It’s also a good co-op game for a younger or casual audience, as most Kirby titles do aim toward lesser-inclined players.
There are other multiplayer-basedMariogames worth recommending beyondSuper Mario Bros. Wonder. For Switch players, this enhanced port of a Wii U game is the one to check out. While it also has four-player Mario cooperative action, it’s a 2.5D game. This will give fans a different perspective to enjoy as they tour around the Mushroom Kingdom with Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad inSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
All four characters have special abilities, like Peach’s skill to glide short distances, which is a carryover fromSuper Mario Bros. 2. Then there is a separate mode in the game wherein Mario and Bowser Jr. can team up for a two-player adventure.
Mr. Sun’s Hatboxwas probably passed up by a lot of players when it launched earlier this year. However, it has all the makings of being one of the best hidden gems on Switch in 2023. The game stars the titular Mr. Sun, who loses his hatbox after it gets delivered.
Mr. Sun then sets up a sort of military operation within his store to facilitate the retrieval of his hatbox through new employees. It’sa roguelike gamewith elements ofMetal Gear Solid: Peace Walkerthrown into its design. Players can capture enemy units and items through balloons, for example. Best of all, there is a two-player co-op option.
There are a lot ofgood modern brawlersto recommend on Switch, butScott Pilgrim vs The World: The Gameranks among the best. It’s a good brawler forSuper Mario Bros. Wonderfans because it references a lot of Mario games from the past. The brightly colored and animatic sprites also gel well next to the expressive characters in Mario’s latest adventure.
Finally, it’s a good time to recommend this game adaptation because a new Netflix anime based on the comics is coming out in November. Players can enjoy this brawler RPG experience alone or with three other friends in a chaotic love letter to Mario and many other older game franchises.
