The Game Awards 2019, which occurred just days ago, was filled with a myriad of exciting announcements. One such announcement came by way of a teaser trailer forGodfall, a PS5 exclusive “looter-slasher” being developed by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox Software. While theGodfalltrailerthat was shown did not offer much in the way of gameplay specifics, more information is available, including some light details on how the game’s cooperative aspect will work.

Specifically, it is now confirmed thatGodfallcan be played alone or “with anyone at any time.” This suggests that there will be no restrictions on when co-op play is available inGodfall, though there is one known limitation: party sizes cannot exceed three players. While this may seem small to some fans, it is not far off from what is supported in several other popular looters, withco-op inBorderlands 3capped at four players as an example, and it is thus not extremely surprising.

Additionally, Gearbox states that theenemies inGodfallhave “been designed from the ground up with co-op in mind.” One way that this will manifest is in the enemies' abilities, which will “counter multiple combatants attacking from different angles.” Presumably, these enemies will simply not employ their multiplayer-targeting abilities when approached by a single player, but little has been said of solo play inGodfallat this time aside from the aforementioned indication that it is indeed possible.

Furthermore, it is currently unknown if there will be activities inGodfallthat require, or at least strongly encourage, co-op play, as there are in looters likeDestiny 2. An alternative approach would be to employ difficulty-scaling based on party size, something that is seen frequently in the highly-popularMonster Hunter: World, and it is even possible thatGodfallwill strike a balance between the two.

One thing is a certainty, though, and that is that further details onGodfall’s co-op, including confirmation on if local co-op is supported, are on the way. Indeed, withGodfall’s release date set for holiday 2020, it should not be long before players get to see more ofthe game in action. Additionally, with the game seemingly serving as one of thePS5 launch titles, though that is not definitively confirmed, Sony is likely to lean on the game as more details are revealed on its next-gen console.
