One gamer playing through Naughty Dog’s remake of its acclaimed titleThe Last of Uson PC had one of the game’s most picturesque and poignant moments ruined after a graphical glitch robbed them of the view. While many gamers were excited when it was revealed that the remake of the PlayStation title would be making its way to PC this year, performance problems andbugs inThe Last of Us Part 1on PChave gotten the release off to a less-than-stellar start.
First released for the PlayStation 3 in 2013,The Last of Ushas been lauded by many players and critics as a groundbreaking work for the gaming industry. Following the exploits of hardened survivor Joel as he transports the teenaged Ellie across a post-apocalyptic America overrun with a mutatedCordycepsfungus, the game was praised for its solid gameplay and emotionally powerful narrative. A remaster was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2015, and a ground-up remake for the PS5 titledThe Last of Us Part 1followed in late 2022. Marking its first appearance outside of Sony’s console lineup,The Last of Us Part 1launched on Steam and the Epic Games Storein March 2023.

A screenshot posted to the r/thelastofus subreddit shows off an ironic example of the many bugs that PC gamers have encountered while playingThe Last of Us Part 1. The bug occurred as Redditor DerFelix reached aniconic scene fromThe Last of Uswhere Joel and Ellie encounter a rare moment of beauty in the game’s desolate world, coming across a stunning view of the State House in Boston gleaming amidst the ruins of the city. Thanks to an annoying graphical glitch, the touching scene, which is fondly remembered by many fans of the game, is almost completely obscured by an opaque white glow.
What makes the bug so memorable is the ironic timing of its appearance, with subtitles in the screenshot showing Ellie stating that “you’re able to’t deny that view” as she stares into the blinding haze. Responding to the apparently overzealous application of a bloom effect in the scene, one Redditor stated that they had encountered the same bug when playingThe Last of Us Part 1on the PlayStation 5. Another comment noted that the blinding white light obscuring nearly everything other than Joel and Ellie makes it look like the duo is witnessing a nuclear blast.
At a time when many gamers are seekingrefunds forThe Last of Us Part 1on PC, DerFelix was lucky that this bug was only a graphical one and didn’t affect the actual gameplay. Hopefully for gamers, Naughty Dog will continue patching the PC port so other players won’t have bugs blocking their view of some truly unforgettable moments.
