Destiny 2has come a long way since it was first released in August 2017. What was once a shell of the originalDestinyhas since transformed into a multiplayer online looter-shooter worthy of the genre. New locales, game systems, an ever-evolving story, and the shift to a free-to-play model are just a few things Bungie has implemented to keepDestiny 2fresh for new and current players alike. Yet despite all its additions,Destiny 2never once brought back a much-loved game mode from the original: the Sparrow Racing League
In Sparrow Racing, Guardians of all ages can partake in races using their single-seat vehicles. The Sparrow Racing League was a limited-time event inDestinybefore being added as a permanent game mode in a later update. Those with the need for speed could race against complete strangers in public matches or with friends in private ones. The mode has its fair share of fans, so one wonders why it hasn’t been added to the sequel yet.

Destiny 2 Has the Mechanics
It’s not likeDestiny 2doesn’t have Sparrows. Each player can acquire or purchase a Sparrow of their own and customize it to their liking. Apart from looking cool, Sparrows provide players with a means to traverse the many worlds ofDestiny 2. The vehicles are mostly utilized in free-roam mode, but there are times whenSparrows are used in activities such as Vanguard strikes and dungeons.
Sparrows don’t play that big a part in the overall gameplay loop, but they are fun to ride. Players can boost their Sparrows to give them an extra bit of speed and can fiddle with the controls to make some tight turns. Some Sparrows even reloadDestiny 2players' weaponsand can be used to perform tricks while in midair. While both the players and their vehicles can still take full damage from enemies and the environment, most Sparrows can easily be recalled a few seconds after being destroyed.
A Racing Steed For Destiny’s Space Knight
According to ex-Bungie Lead Artist Tom Doyle, the Sparrow was designed to be like a “horse to ride” for players. Since the maps of the firstDestinyare rather large, the Sparrows are supposed to be easy to summon and fun to ride.Destinycapitalized on this byadding the Sparrow Racing LeaguebutDestiny 2hasn’t done anything in this regard.
Awarding Sparrow Racing League-themed gear, cosmetics, and weapons would be surefire ways to get players back into the game mode, but the best way to improve uponDestiny’s Sparrow Racing League would be to use the new locations found in the sequel.Destiny 2has some prime real estate that can be used as race courses, withDestinylocations like Europa and the Moonpossessing wide spaces and natural ramps for players to drive their Sparrows through. With a good bit of tweaking – adding more jumps and speed boots is always a plus – Bungie could create some really fun Sparrow Racing League tracks.
It is understandable why Bungie hasn’t brought back the Sparrow Racing League. The studio is hard at work onDestiny 2’s next expansion,Lightfall, and fine-tuning the conclusion to the Light and Darkness saga it started quite a while back. More players are arguably more excited for new, beefy content than the return of an old mode like Sparrow Racing, but perhaps onceLightfallhas come out and the dust has settled, Bungie can use the downtime to reintroduce Sparrow Racing to theDestinyuniverse. It’s a fun, lighthearted change of pace as opposed to the heavy narratives of bigger expansions, and originalDestinyplayers and those who love riding their Sparrows will get a kick out of playing it.
Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
