Speedrunning presents new challenges for players who are either looking to set personal goals, smash world records, help good causes, or just find new ways to play games. With even the likes ofElden Ringexperiencing a surge in speedruns, the community at large is quick both in-game and in terms of finding strategies for new releases. But classic games likeMario Kart 64are just as prime for these challenges as modern releases, and it looks like one player has managed to become the current world champion.

In a video uploaded to YouTube a couple of days ago, user kaznMK64 has managed to beat the previous world record for speedrunning the classicMario Kartgame from the Nintendo 64 era with a time of 23:28. According to speedrun.com, this particular challenge was done in the “All Cups (Skips)” category, which means the runner completes all the races but is allowed to implement skips, as kaznMK64 has done. What’s also interesting about this is they beat the previous record by just one second.

Overall, it’s an impressive feat and shows just how skillful and dedicated players are when it comes to attempting new world records. Of course, there are plenty ofMariogames worthy of speedrunning, withMario 64often being the most popular. But seeing it done in a game designed for speed is just as impressive.

What’s more is that kaznMK64’s record-setting victory may create a precedent and could encourage abney317 to try and win back their title, or for someone else to come along and smash this latest time.
