Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxywas not the critical or sales success that Eidos Montreal and Square Enix necessarily were hoping for. Despite that, the action-adventure game managed to tell one of the best stories of 2021, winning multiple awards includingBest Narrative at The Game Awardsthat year. That’s in no small part due toGuardians of the Galaxy’s executive narrative director Mary DeMarle. It seems DeMarle has left Eidos Montreal behind now, however, as she recently confirmed she’s joinedBioWare.
DeMarle confirmed her hiring toBioWarewith a post on LinkedIn shared on Friday. DeMarle shared a short message with her followers, announcing that she’s “happy to share” that she’s joined BioWare in the role of Senior Narrative Director. Her LinkedIn confirms that DeMarle left Eidos Montreal at the start of July, so she’s only freshly begun with BioWare and understandably has no further information to share about what’s coming next.

The transition to BioWare comes after a very impressive run of eight-and-a-half years atEidos Montreal.Guardians of the Galaxymay stand out as DeMarle’s major accomplishment given her role on the project, but she also served as a narrative designer and lead writer onDeus Ex: Human Revolutionfollowed by a promotion to executive narrative director forDeus Ex: Mankind Divided. Even before her work at Eidos Montreal, DeMarle wrote forMyst 3,Myst 4, andHomeworld 3.
Needless to say, DeMarle is quite the hire for BioWare. The big question then is which project DeMarle will be working on at BioWare. It would be a bit late for DeMarle to come in forDragon Age: Dreadwolf, though there’s certain to be more coming from theDragon Agefranchise going forward. Not only should there be DLC, but alsoDragon Agebooks, tabletop, and more. That’s all within DeMarle’s wheelhouse.
BioWare fans already know what the more likely option is, however. As BioWare works toward the finish ofDragon Age: Dreadwolf, it’s likely shifting to its next project. AnewMass Effectwas announced in 2020and, if production is ramping up, bringing in a new narrative director would make sense.
Whether she’s joining BioWare to work onDragon AgeorMass Effect, Mary DeMarle’s an exciting addition. Fans of herGuardians of the Galaxystorywill know exactly what kind of talent she’s bringing to any project she’s on. Her now long history working on sci-fi projects, in particular, will have manyBioWarefans excited about the future.
