TheMortal Kombatseries is no stranger to guest characters. Horror icons like Freddy Kreuger and Jason Voorhees have appeared in previous entries, andMortal Kombat 11already has the Terminator, withcomic book characters Jokerand Spawn soon to follow. But while there could still be more added in future DLC, it seems two characters in particular will definitely not be making any sort of appearance, as confirmed by director Ed Boon.
The two characters in question are DC’s most prolific superheroes - Superman and Batman. BecauseMortal Kombat 11developer NetherRealm Studios also made theInjusticefighting games and the aforementioned Joker is going to be DLC, it may seem plausible for Superman and Batman to cross over toMortal Kombatas well. But after a fan posited this possibility to Ed Boon over Twitter, he responded with a very blunt “Nope.”

Boon is known for trolling potential characters for theMortal Kombatgames, but this is an unusually straightforward response from him. It’s very different to how he reacted when fans asked ifPennywise fromITcould be addedas a playable character, which was a lot more jokey.
Boon didn’t provide a reason as to why Superman and Batman would never be included, but we can probably make some safe assumptions. Even if Boon wanted to add them, it’s unlikely that DC would agree to it, since it would mean allowing two of the comic book company’s most beloved and iconic characters, who are also enjoyed by young children, to be decapitated, have their organs ripped out of their bodies, and overall be brutally maimed. This is most likely the reason why Capcom turned down the chance to haveaStreet Fightercharacter cameoin aMortal Kombatgame as well.
Also, both Superman and Batman have strict no-kill policies, so it would be very out of character to see them viciously murder people. Superman was the main villain of theInjusticegames and was perfectly willing to kill there, but it was moderately tamer than the kind of deaths that occur inMortal Kombat.
While this may disappoint some fans, there are still potentially more characters to look forward to seeing added toMK 11. Only last month, a datamine suggested thata second pack of DLCis planned, which will apparently include long-time regulars like Fujin and Sheeva.
Mortal Kombat 11is available right now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version launching on November 19.
