The latest version ofMultiVersushas just been released, and it’s bringing a whole host of game-changing overhauls.MultiVersusis the popular platform fighter from Player First Games, combining a heap of iconic characters from Warner Bros. properties including Batman, Bugs Bunny, and most recentlyGizmo fromGremlins. While the immediate appeal ofMultiVersusfor many gamers might be in its wacky roster, like any competitive fighter, it needs to be constantly updated to ensure its players can’t find exploits and overpowered characters in the meta.

For a while,MultiVersus’Game Director Tony Huynhhas promised that the team at Player First Games would be focusing primarily on changes to the hitbox and hurtbox systems. These promises came shortly after fans expressed frustration with certain characters and moves upon the release ofMultiVersus’open beta. Finn fromAdventure Timecaught a lot of hate for his backpack attack, which many found to have an unfair hitbox, as it caught them when it didn’t appear that it had.

This led theMultiVersusteam to look into the hitbox and hurtbox systems of the game as a whole, rather than just nerfing Finn and other problematic characters. For the uninitiated, a hitbox is the range of an attack, usually represented by an invisible box in a game, showing where the move can land while a hurtbox determines whether a character is hit by a given attack. To change these elements, the team at Player First Games, more closely attached the hurtboxes to a character, so that they won’t get hit by something that doesn’t connect with the fighter’s model.

Moreover, there are also some big changes coming to projectiles in patch 1.02. Rather than each projectile behaving individually,MultiVersusis standardizing ranged attacks, making it so a player doesn’t have to study the game for hours on end to learn when to dodge certain attacks. As well, now all projectiles in the game will break when met with another ranged attack. This will hopefully stop some otherirritatingMultiVersuscharacters like Bugs Bunnyand Tom and Jerry from just spamming attacks from the other side of an arena.

Some other, more minor changes are coming in the latestMultiVersuspatch, too, such as the ability to preview announcer packs before buying them, alongside some general bug fixes to the game. As the platform fighter continues to improve its core gameplay, it also releases new characters into its roster. Today, Gizmo will join the fight, and soon he’ll be followed by Black Adam, Stripe, and Rick who are allconfirmed characters to be coming toMultiVersus.

Here are the early patch notes for 1.02 before they were removed from the blog:

GAMEPLAY SYSTEMS

Hitbox/Hurtbox Update

This patch includes our hitbox/hurtbox system overhaul. Our goal with this update is to more tightly tie hitboxes and hurtboxes to our character animations. We will be keeping an eye on how this update affects the player experience and we are ready to implement additional patches if any problems arise. This will be a process for us to get there, but this is our first step towards truly accurate hitbox/hurtbox detection and gives us a foundation to permanently fixing issues going forward.

Changes:

Projectile Systems Update

This patch also includes the first part of our projectile systems update. MultiVersus is a game that thrives on interesting interactions between fighters, between allies, and between projectiles, but a player shouldn’t need an encyclopedic knowledge of every attack in the game to feel comfortable understanding those interactions. Our goal with this update is to standardize global projectile behaviors so players can better adapt strategies around projectiles. This update is just the first part of our projectile systems changes, so expect more updates in a future patch.

Cromulons and Cromulons (1 vs 1)

Batman

We’re watching Batman closely. The Projectile Systems update will make it so all projectiles will properly destroy the batarang so we want to see how this plays out for a bit before further adjustments. The goal is to make Batman Batarang have understandable counterplay.

Bugs Bunny

Bugs Bunny is still a bit too safe and unpunishable due to land-canceling recovery. The new active frames adjustment and global hurtbox updates will hopefully make Bugs Bunny’s up air attack more manageable from the opponent’s side.

Tom And Jerry

Velma

Wonder Woman

MultiVersusis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
