The former was announced to be released in 2025, whileDragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake’shighly anticipated release date was announced for July 24, 2025.
The third game in theDragon Questfranchise is one of the best known, being the beginning of The Erdrick Trilogy. It was originally announced during the franchise’s 35th anniversary, whichhonored every game in theDragon Questseries. The developers announced that it will have gameplay based on the style ofOctopath Traveler. While it’s an HD remake, players can still expect the original graphics in vibrant HD-2D. The same can be said for theDragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, which are entirely different beasts on their own. There’s a reason why the third game starts a completely different narrative.
Square Enix announced thatDragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remakewill arrive in 2025, offering players plenty of time to speculate about what they can expect.Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remakeis set to be released on November 14. The three games all feature the same protagonist, Erdrick, and are all part of the same story, with the third one being the first chronologically. Considering that, it makes sense for the developers to release the third game in the franchise before the other two.Dragon Quest 2is said to be the hardestof all the games by fans.
Dragon Quest Remakes Take Over the Switch
TheDragon Questfranchise has two trilogies, starting with The Erdrick Trilogy. If not released for modern consoles, most of the later games have had some kind of remake that was released on the most modern console at the time. The Zenithian Trilogy, which includesDragon Quest 4, 5, and 6was the first of the games to be remade for the Nintendo DS. Even those not part of a trilogy, likeDragon Quest 7, 8, and 9had remakes released on the 3DS. It’s great news thatDragon Quest 3has an official release date on modern consoles, considering the long wait due toproducer Yu Miyake stepping down.
BothDragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D RemakeandDragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remakeare likely to be highly anticipated by fans, especially consideringDragon Quest 12was announced during the 35th anniversary livestream. Franchise creator Yuji Horii explained that the game will be much darker than previous games with a new battle system different fromthe classic turn-based system. With the release of the former two, new fans will be introduced just in time for the next game.

Dragon Quest is a fantasy roleplaying game series created by authors Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Koichi Sugiyama and published by Square Enix. Each game typically consists of a nameless central character know as the Hero fighting evil with their party members. They encounter monsters such as the famous Slime mascot. There are currently 11 games in the main franchise.
