Summary
A curiousPokemonfan recently pointed out a bizarre inconsistency with how Gastly is portrayed in the main series and various spin-offs. This spooky Ghost/Poison hybrid was introduced in the originalPokemon Red and Blueas the first step in an evolution chain that hauntedLavender Town’s creepy Pokemon Tower. It evolves into the equally spectral Haunter once it reaches level 25, which in turn becomes Gengar after being traded or exposed to the Linking Cord item.
Gastly and the rest of the Kanto Ghost lineage have appeared in just about every subsequentPokemongeneration, as well as spin-offs likePokemon GO. This includes thePokemon Stadiumtitles, which allowed players to battle their creatures in 3D matches on the N64. BothStadiumgames were eventually made available to play through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, with 2000’sPokemon Stadium 2being re-releasedon the service earlier this month. This has allowedPokemonfans who missed out on theStadiumgames to experience the full 3D renders of classic Pokemon andMario Party-style minigames of the original N64 titles.

However, some players are also noticing strange inconsistencies with how certain Pokemon are portrayed in the olderStadiumtitles, such as Reddit user KansasVenomoth. In a pair of screenshots posted on r/PokemonScarletandViolet, they pointed out thatGhastly appears quite small inScarlet and Violetand other mainline titles, but inStadiumit towers over supposedly larger creatures like Ekans - which is said to be a good two feet taller than the 4-foot Ghastly in official reference materials.
Pokemonfans in the comment section of KansasVenomoth’s post have made jokes about the Ekans shown in theStadiumscreenshot being a baby or that Gastly has expanded to fill the battlefield as gas in the real world would. Others have pointed out thatGastly isn’t being depicted accuratelyin theScarlet and Violetscreenshot either, as it is shown to be much smaller than the 5-foot-tall player character. This in turn is explained by certain users pointing out that thePokemonseries established that individuals of the same species can be different sizes in past games.
SomePokemoncommentators have also pointed out that the originalPokemon Stadiumwas developed and released during the franchise’s earlier years, a time when it wasn’t yet established how Pokemon looked and functioned in a 3D space. A prime example of this is how Gastly appears much larger inStadiumthan it does in the rest of the series, which itself has varied in how this infamous ball of spirit energy and poison mist measures up to the rest of thePokemonworld.
