When Game Freak and Nintendo released the Generation 7Pokemongames,Pokemon Sun and Moon, they introduced the concept of regional variants to the franchise. For the uninitiated, regional variants are essentially remixed versions of existing Pokemon, giving them new looks and typing based on the location in which they live.Pokemon Sword and Shieldfeatured even more regional variants, and so too did the latest main seriesPokemonrelease,Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

It’s probable, though unconfirmed at this point, that the upcomingPokemon Scarlet and Violetwill feature regional variants of their own. Most of the regional variants created so far have been based on Generation 1 Pokemon, so it stands to reason that whatever regional variants are dreamed up forPokemon Scarlet and Violetwill likely also be based on Generation 1 Pokemon. With that in mind, onePokemonfan has decided to design their own take on a possible regional variant for Generation 1 Pokemon Tauros inPokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s regionhas not been revealed at the time of this writing, but it’s assumed to be based on Spain. Considering this, Reddit user Bearys_Cave designed aPokemon Scarlet and Violetregional variant for Tauros inspired by bullfighting. This regional variant for Tauros also functions as a criticism of Spain’s controversial bullfighting practice, as they decided to make this version of Tauros a ghost/steel-type Pokemon.

Bearys_Cave pointed out how the bulls used in bullfighting are stabbed with steel javelins, and how they are often killed after their performances. “I wanted to implement this cruelty in my design,” Bearys_Cave explained in the comments of the Reddit thread. They explained that instead of making this version of Tauros a “vengeful soul,” they decided to make it “sad and confused,” which is what they think the bulls used in bullfighting feel. It’s an impressive design, and while Pokemon hasn’t shied away from tragic backstories forghost-type Pokemon, it seems like it may be a little too dark to be featured in an actualPokemongame.

As far as Pokemon that have been confirmed forPokemon Scarlet and Violetgo, only a handful have been announced at the time of this writing. And out of those, only three are brand-new Pokemon. The first trailer for the games confirmed thePokemon Scarlet and Violetstarter Pokemonand not much else, but hopefully more information comes soon.
