OnePS5owner came up with an interesting way to celebrate the hardware’s retro history. The impressive modification is enough to immediately make a person think back on the consoles that had to come first in order for thePlayStation 5to earn the “5” in its name.
The PS5 released on Jun 06, 2025, and immediately proved almost impossible to find in most stores. Just recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan finally was able to announcePS5 console shortages are officially over. However, that announcement was a long time coming. Many players who have enjoyed games on Sony hardware throughout the last 2 years did so by playing them on PlayStation 4.

On the PlayStation subreddit, PS5 owner seymourbuttz214 posted an image of their PS5 with a black case and with the familiar PlayStation 2 logo presented in rainbow hues of red, yellow, and blue. The poster explained they used a can of Plasti Dip to turn the hardware’s white plates black and then added vinyl decals for some of the authentic detail work. They also enhanced the logo on the primarily white controller with the classic color scheme from PlayStation’s early days, though the bulk of that accessory remains white. The love seymourbuttz214 lavished on the project suggests they may agree with the suggestion thePS2 might always be the golden era of PlayStation consoles.
A retro look for the PS5 is fitting, and it also feels like something Sony itself might do. When the PS5 launched, the company included theAstro’s Playroomsoftware as a free pack-in. Besides introducing new functionality in the PS5 controller,Astro’s Playroomreferenced older PlayStation gamesfrom across the console generations, including the PlayStation 2 original,God of War(in one scene, bots occupy themselves by playing “Bot of War” on a television screen). Players also could climb all over supersized models of the older consoles in a hangar of sorts.
After a regrettable period where Sony struggled to understand why players might still enjoy spending time with its older games, the company has since found opportunities to turn that nostalgia into revenue.PlayStation Plus Premium offers numerous PS2 classics, ranging from established classics such asWild Arms 3and Naughty Dog’s classic trilogy ofJakgames to lesser known fare such asSirenandWar of the Monsters. Entire generations of gamers are old enough to remember sinking countless enjoyable hours into the brand-defining games that made PlayStation a household name. They are the players, parents, developers, and hobbyists who serve as the company’s best hope as it looks toward the future and works to appeal to a new generation of gamers. Here’s hoping Sony will make it even easier for any new fans to immerse themselves inPlayStation’s rich history in the years to follow.
