After almost two years of waiting,Rogue Legacy 2has finally released in full on PC and the Xbox family of consoles. The firstRogue Legacywas groundbreaking for the time, takingits roguelike inspirations, and popularizing them with intuitive mechanics and an extremely addictive gameplay loop.Rogue Legacy 2takes what made the first game so special and cranks everything up to 11, bringing even more weapons, bosses, and gear to the table.

One ofthe best improvementsRogue Legacy 2has made over its predecessoris its brand-new roster of complex character classes. Though the roster is filled with gaming archetypes like the Knight, Hunter, or Bard class, each one has their own unique set of weapons and abilities, making each one worthy of testing out. By far, one of the most powerful and satisfying classes is the Astromancer, a unique spin on the stereotypical Mage.

The Astromancer’s Weapon

The main weapon ofRogue Legacy 2’s Astromancer classis one of the most powerful in the entire game. Called the “Celestial Sceptre,” this magic staff is capable of opening a black rift in front of the player, dealing devastating amounts of damage to those trapped in its hit box. The longer an enemy stays in the vicinity of the black hole, the more they are damaged.

This brutal attack ignores any terrain obstacles, giving the attack a surprisingly large area of effect. For enemies trapped in the very center of the black hole, they will receive even more damage per hit, asthe attack Skill Crits. If an enemy stays in the black hole’s vicinity for its entire duration, then the attack will hit them a total of 25 times. The Celestial Sceptre is also capable of firing multiple times in a row if the player’s MP is high enough, leading to multiple black holes opening at once.

To make the Celestial Sceptre even more powerful, players can equip a variety of Relics. One ofthe best Relics for the Celestial Sceptreis the Heavy Stone Bargain Relic, which gives every hit from the black hole an additional 100% damage output. As the black hole attack is capable of hitting 25 times in a row, the Boxing Bell Relic is another great choice, adding the Combo effect to the weapon, which increases each subsequent attack’s damage by 3%, eventually stacking to produce a final hit that outputs 75% more damage.

The Astromancer’s Abilities

On top of a superb weapon, the Astromancer also has some stellar abilities. Theclass' passive abilitygrants the player a 20% bonus to Intelligence, and also adds an effect whereby each successful hit generates one point of Mana. This ability works wonderfully with the Astromancer’s Celestial Sceptre, giving the weapon the possibility of generating up to 25 Mana points in just one attack.

Each ofRogue Legacy 2’s classes also has a unique Talent. These Talents can summon protective barriers, spawn a controllable turret, or activate a devastating special attack. The Astromancer’s Talent is, once again, one of the most powerful in the entire game, but it does have a few caveats that keep it from being unstoppable.

Called “Comet Form,” the Astromancer’s Talent turns the player into an invincible, flying comet. While in Comet Form, the Astromancer is capable of crashing into an enemy, dealing 10 ticks of damage. Once the Talent expires, or the player cancels it, they gain a brief speed boost.

However, this Talent only lasts 1.5 seconds, and has a cooldown of 7 seconds. The Comet Form Talent is also canceled out of whenever the player inputs another button, meaning that they cannot attack, jump, dash, or cast spells while using the Talent. Despite this, theAstromancer’s Comet Form Talentis still an impressive one.

Rogue Legacy 2is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
