BBC’sSherlock, the update on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous Victorian detective, now solving crimes in the modern world, was a fan favorite almost from the word go. Cumberbatch and Freeman, in the days when they were still pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe, led the way through updated versions of well-known Sherlock Holmes stories.

The last series ofSherlockaired 5 years ago, and since then, both of its main leads have gone on to great success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Freeman as CIA agent Everett Ross. Both have become bona fide global movie stars, and they alsopaired up again inThe Hobbittrilogy, with Freeman taking the lead as Bilbo Baggins and Cumberbatch playing the dragon, Smaug. In a recent interview withBBC’sTodaypromoting a new play he wrote for the West End, Moffat says he would “start writing tomorrow,” if Cumberbatch and Freeman agreed to come back. Moffat said, “They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, ‘please come back?’”
Sherlock, co-created by Moffat and Mark Gatiss ofThe League of Gentlemanfame, launched in 2010 and found success right away, not only with the critics but also fans who began shipping the two characters almost as soon as the first episode had premiered. Over the years, the duo consisting ofCumberbatch’s arch Sherlock Holmesand Freeman’s earnest John Watson (his Afghan war veteran background still sadly relevant in the modern world) faced off with Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), updated from an American actress to a British dominatrix, and Moriarty (Andrew Scott), who wasn’t updated at all from being Holmes' number one nemesis. Sherlock and Watson even faced Holmes' evil sister and a new character, Eurus Holmes (Sian Brook).
Sherlock Holmes, who fully entered the public domain, has been adapted in several ways. This includes the Guy Ritchie actioner starring Robert Downey, Jr. as the detective and Jude Law as John Watson, a comedy featuring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, and even as an animated mouse inThe Great Mouse Detective. The character, created for Conan Doyle’s original novella,A Study in Scarlet, became so popular that when the fictional character was killed off (before later being brought back), men around England were mourning his passing. In the years since then, the character’s popularity hasn’t waned. It’s just maybe not enough to attract the movie stars back to the small screen for another round ofSherlock.
Sherlockis available on Amazon Prime Video.
