Among the manyRatchetfigurines throughout the 2021 timeline, TheSunset Overdrivemascot and main villain, Fizzie, hidden behind a figurine box for theRatchet and Clank Futureseries was hidden in plain sight for many fans, initially. The Easter egg was first recognized by the general public viaa fan who tweeted the discovery in his excitement, A few days later following the retrospective trailer, theSunset OverdriveTwitter account based on Fizzie had tweeted for the first time since 2018.
Fizzie’s tweet was actually a reference to a different tweet entirely as earlier in the afternoon, the official Insomniac Games accounttweeted aSunset Overdrive-based tweet of its own. An image of the oversized Fizzie that the player fights inSunset Overdriveis edited with a portal rift, making it appear as if the rift between the two universes is “breaking apart.”
Insomniac Games acknowledgingSunset Overdriveis a huge win for its fans, as the game was exclusive on Microsoft consoles and PC for years prior to Sony purchasing the company. As Insomniac Games owns theSunset OverdriveIP, this is the first time that the IP is shown on a Sony product followingSony registering the trademark in back March.Ultimately, it was a promotion forRatchet and Clank’s newest weapon, the RYNO 8, first mentioned earlier in the afternoon as the latest edition of the superweapon first introduced in the original game.
InRift Apart, the RYNO 8 has the ability to displace objectsfrom other “dimensions,” featuring cameos from titles includingSly CooperandHorizon Zero Dawnamong others. With the bevy of Easter egg tweets coming full circle, the interconnectivity between Insomniac Games and its neighboring developers' various IPs forming a “multiverse” of sorts is an intriguing thought for the future of other titles within their individual franchises.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apartwill release on June 11th, 2021 for the PS5.
