Ever since Joker fromPersona 5was announced at The Game Awards in 2018,Super Smash Bros. Ultimatefans have looked forward to the awards show in hopes of finding out who would be joining the all-star cast of fighters next. And althoughMinecraft’s Steve/Alex recently released as a DLC fighter back in October, another new character is already on the way.

Fan speculation has been all over the place as of late, with some hoping forDoom’s Doomguy,Kingdom Hearts’ Sora,Fortnite’s Jonesy, and even Master Chief fromHalo. And while all of these characters are certainly qualified for a spot onSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate’s roster, it’s safe to say that fans are excited about the game’s next DLC character.

AfterNintendo announced on Twitter just this morningthat a new DLC fighter would be announced for the game tonight at The Game Awards 2020, the highly anticipated reveal kicked off the official start of the show. Sephiroth fromFinal Fantasyhas been revealed asSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate’s next DLC fighter.

Sephiroth is shown off in one of the series’ most nail-biting character reveal trailers yet, accompanied by his iconic musical theme, “One-Winged Angel.” The character is depicted effortlessly destroying the game’sWorld of Light villain, Galeem,in a single blow, and shows the antagonist dueling with all-stars like Mario, Bayonetta, and of course, Cloud. Although the trailer doesn’t reveal many details, such as whichmusic tracks will be included in Sephiroth’s challenger pack, the character is slated for a December 2020 release.

The new character joins the abundance of recent third-party additions toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, joining the ranks of Banjo and Kazooie,Dragon Quest’s Hero, andCastlevania’s Simon and Richter Belmont. While some may be disappointed that Sora fromKingdom Heartswas not revealed,despite trending on Twitter today,Sephiroth’s inclusion in the gamemakesFinal Fantasythe first third-party series to have two completely unique characters inSuper Smash Bros.Ultimate, as Cloud was added to the series inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

Since his inclusion,Cloud has continued to be a fan favoriteinSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, and seeing as “One-Winged Angel” is currently trending on Twitter, it’s clear that fans are pleased with the villain’s inclusion. With only a few more weeks left in December, it will be interesting to see when more details about Sephiroth’s release will be revealed.
