Over the last 20 years,Call of Dutyhas cemented itself as one of the greatest multiplayer franchises on the planet, pioneering an array of features and mechanics that have now become staples of the industry. One of the biggest and best features ofCall of Duty’s multiplayeris its expansive weapon customization system, which has only grown more impressive with each entry. But if there’s one game that can surpass it, it’sThe Last of Us Multiplayer.
A game that’s been leaked continuously over the last few years, but only officially announced since last Summer,The Last of Us Multiplayeris set to be a standalone, online multiplayer game set inNaughty Dog’s Cordyceps-infected universe. Though virtually nothing official has been revealed about the game,The Last of Us Multiplayeris expected to be a PvPvE,Escape From Tarkov-esque experience, where players will need to scavenge for supplies, avoid infected, and face off against other players along the way. And if that is the case, thenThe Last of Us Multiplayercan really get creative with its weapon customization.

The Last of Us Multiplayer Could Boast An Even More Creative Version of Call of Duty’s Gunsmith
Call of Dutycurrently has, arguably, the best weapon customization in any multiplayer video game. Back whenCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfarereleased in 2007, its weapon customization system was a first for console shooters, allowing players to equip certain attachments to improve a weapon’s performance. As the years have gone on, and theCall of Dutyentries have kept piling up, the franchise’s weapon customization feature has only grown more impressive.
The most recentCall of Dutyentry,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, boasts an incredibly impressive system named Gunsmith 2.0. Taking the groundwork from 2019’sModern Warfarereboot and adding even more to it,Modern Warfare 2’s Gunsmith 2.0lets players choose from an eye-watering number of attachments, each with their own unique set of stat advantages and disadvantages. And if that wasn’t overwhelming enough, Gunsmith 2.0 also lets players tune each component of the weapon, choosing which specific statistic it favors.
WhileThe Last of Us Multiplayerprobably won’t have quite as much depth to its weapon customization asModern Warfare 2, nor should it, it does have the perfect opportunity to give players a more creative weapon customization system. With the game presumably focusing on scavenging supplies and loot,The Last of Us Multiplayercould center its progression systems around creating and upgrading weapons, with new attachments being craftable from the parts the player scavenges during a match. But rather than just a simple red dot sight or wooden stock,The Last of Us Multiplayershould get a little more inventive with it.
The Last of Us Multiplayer’s weapon attachments should feel a bit odd and out of place, as though they had actually been cobbled together from a box of scraps. BothThe Last of UsPart 1andPart 2feature a satisfying weapon customization system, but the attachments added to each weapon can feel a little too refined and high-tech for Joel and Ellie’s skill level and the parts they’d feasibly be finding in the wild. The Last of Us Multiplayershould feature a ton of misshapen and makeshift attachments, from pieces of metal taped together to make a rifle stock, to metal cans used as silencers. While players could unlock more high-tech gear as they progress through the game, the vast majority ofThe Last of Us Multiplayer’s weapon attachments should all be delightfully strange and quirky, at least when it comes to their visual design.
The Last of Us Multiplayeris currently in development.
