Game publisher jUbisoft has announced a new fantasy football title,One Shot League. One Shot League, which was developed by Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab in collaboration with Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League, is unique in that it will use blockchain-based technology to create digital “cards” which players will collect and use.

In addition to the Belgian Pro League,One Shot Leaguewas also developed in collaboration with Sorare, an existing blockchain-based online fantasy football game. Like Sorare,One Shot Leaguewill allow players to collect cards representing professional football players and then deploy a “team” of five of them to compete against other players' “teams.”

Initially, players from the Jupiler League will be featured, but it is likely that more football players from around the world will be added as the game’s development continues. However, as of 2021, the Belgian League includes over 120 teams whose players can appear in the upcoming game.

The blockchain technology used in bothSorareandOne Shot Leagueis based on the existing open-source blockchain system Ethereum, which was recently the source of disproved rumors regarding thePlayStation 5 console being used for bitcoin mining. The blockchain will be used to generate the cards, each of which will have its own stats and abilities based on the player it represents, and allow players to claim, collect, store and sell them. Cards acquired inOne Shot Leaguewill be able to be used inSorareand vice versa.

Digital football collectibles, such as the cards used inOne Shot LeagueandSorare, are growing in popularity due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As sports fans cannot meet up in person to exchange cards or other collectibles, a digital alternative is extremely favorable. The ability to play fantasy football with favorite players can also serve as an alternative to attending games in person, which many fans still cannot do due to social distancing or quarantine orders. However, players should be careful not to forget the password to their accounts for these games, as they could end up like the programmer wholost access to $240 million worth of bitcoin.

Ubisoft is part of the Blockchain Game Alliance, a group of developers committed to using blockchain to develop new titles. Last year, Ubisoft releasedRabbids Tokens,a blockchain-based game in which players collected items inspired by the popularRabbidsfranchise, which previously crossed over withMarioin theSwitch’s best-selling third party game.

A beta version of the game will be available beginning Jun 05, 2025. Hopefully, the announcement of the beta will not be a hoax, as recently occurred with false emails claiming to provide access to theFar Cry 6beta.

One Shot Leagueis currently planned to be a free-to-play online PC title. Its full release date has not yet been announced.
