The May 2023 update for theXbox Series X|Shas just gone live and appears to be making some quality of life updates. Combined witha top Game Pass game receiving a stabilizing patch, May looks to be a good month to be an Xbox player.

First dropping in late 2020, theXbox Series Xmakes up the fourth generation of Xbox consoles alongside its Series S counterpart, the latter differentiated by its lessened graphical capability and digital-only model. The Xbox Series X/S became the fastest-selling Xbox console to date, selling an estimated 18.5 million units in its first two years on the market. Of course, no console is perfect upon release, but thanks to modern technology, developers have the ability to tweak them and improve the experience without having to release entirely new models all the time.

As revealed on the official Xbox news site, the latest firmware update is now available and contains four notable changes. The first of which allows players to view the Xbox gamertags of their Discord friends, which should make the process of adding Xbox friends far more streamlined. Next up is a change to the Microsoft Store, with the addition of sorting and filtering options to make finding whichever game one seeks all the easier. Players would be able to sort software by its price, supported languages, and more. With even more Xbox games on the horizon, such an improvement is much appreciated.

The third change is a firmware update to the controller, fixing a bug that causes rechargeable batteries to drain unusually quickly. A second bug that causes controllers from disconnecting from games while using headphones will also be patched. Finally, the Quests section on a player’s Game Pass account is being relocated to the Rewards tab, which should make tracking one’s quest progress much easier. Withthe Game Pass library set to expandlater this month, such a change feels appropriate, though it will only be initially available to a select group of owners.

Players who download this update should be able to find more enjoyment in their Xbox Series X experience. Despite ongoing chip shortages, a lack of concrete sales data, and a recent admittance of defeat from Phil Spencer, it seems Xbox isn’t giving up on its current consoles, with evena brand new controllerrecently entering the online market. Only time will tell if continued quality of life updates combined with more games can cushion this blow to the gaming giant.
